Kate Travers, LCSW-C (she/her)

Do you ever wonder why it is that even though you’ve tried to do the right thing and be a good person you still struggle to feel good with yourself and in relationships? I love working with motivated people to help them build the kind of relationships with their children, partners and other family members that they want to have. I specialize in working with curious adults who want to feel better in their day to day lives. They may know something is off about how they interact in their closest relationships or may feel like life was supposed to turn out differently for them than it has. They come in wanting to heal past hurts to help them move forward toward a life with relationships closer to what they envisioned. I especially love working with parents who want to give their children something different than what they had growing up. Having grown up in a queer family myself, I also love working with all types of families and have specialized training to work with adoption, foster care, the LGBTQIA+ community, and traditional families. My goal is to help you achieve the life and relationships YOU envision for yourself and to recognize healthy relationships that are mutually supportive.
Over the years I have picked up a number of different techniques to work with you in therapy and together we can decide what works best for you. All of my work is informed by an expertise in understanding and helping to heal trauma and attachment wounds. I tend to use EMDR, attachment therapy, and Internal Family Systems (IFS) as my primary modalities. I take a practical approach and we start with small changes that can have a ripple effect making any big changes happen easier when the time comes.

If you want to know more about my background, I am the co-creator of the Stages of Trauma and Recovery (STAR) Model and co-author of the children's book Sometimes Really Bad Things Happen. Starting primarily as a child therapist, I worked with young children with a history of trauma. Understanding that the bond between parents and infants create a foundational experience, I sought training in working with building healthy attachment for children and adults from hard places. I later went on to become the Clinical Director for a residential program for pregnant women involved in the criminal justice system. In this program, I worked with an intervention called Circle of Security to help parents with mental health and substance abuse issues to bond with their babies and promote secure attachments. I have also worked as an advocate in the LGBT Community for decades, formerly serving on the Committee for Sexual Minority Issues with the National Association of Social Workers Maryland Chapter, and on the National board for COLAGE, a non-profit that builds communities for people raised in families with LGBTQ parents. I have completed my Level I and II training for EMDR and am a Safe and Sound Protocol Practitioner. I provide training for professionals working with trauma and attachment disorders and am a Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) Practitioner and Educator. I love learning, growing and teaching and am a board certified Social Work Supervisor. Please contact me if you are interested in therapy, a training or supervision.
